What is the IP rating for Smartphones?

IP (Ingress Protection ) codes is an IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard that provides complete details on the degree of protection to electrical components such as smartphones, smartwatches, earbuds and many more. These IP codes were developed to rate the electrical device when exposed to solids and water.

Numerous of the new generation electronic component is certified with IP codes which have to be known to the consumers. A manufacturer may promote a product as “safe” or “waterproof,” but when you’re preferring electrical components for use in vehicles or mobile equipment, you need the dedicated data that an IP rating provides.

Reading from left to right IP stands for Ingress Protection and the first numerical refers to the degree of protection from solids objects and dust whereas the second numerical refers to the degree of protection from water.

The below table provides full details on each IP code.

IP 1 Protection against solid objects over 50mm
(ex. a hand)		 1 Protection against vertically falling drops of water
IP 2 Protection against solid objects over 12mm
(ex. a finger)		 2 Protection from vertical drops of water when tilted at 15°
IP 3 Protection against solid objects over 2.5mm
(ex. a screwdriver)		 3 Protection from vertical water spray up to 60° (max 3 min)
IP 4 Protection against solid objects over 1mm
(ex. tools or wire)		 4 Protection against splashes from all directions (limited ingress permitted)
IP 5 Protection against dust limited ingress for 2-8 hrs with no harmful deposit 5 Protected from water jets from all directions – causes no harmful effects
IP 6 Complete protection against dust from
enclosure		 6 Protection from powerful water jets from all directions – no harmful effects
IP 69k Protected against dust ingress and high temperature, high-pressure spray 7 Water immersion protection between 15 cm and 1m up to 30 min
IP 6K9K Completely protected against dust ingress and close-range high temperature, high-pressure spray 8 Water immersion protection for long periods of time under pressure
9K Protection against close range, high pressure and high-temperature spray

For example, if your smartphone or any electrical gadget is rated IP68, that means complete protection from dust and is completely waterproof.
