Nord VPN, one of the top VPN providers in the world, announced today that it may cease operations in India as a result of the cybersecurity rules issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) via the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) on April 28.

Patricija Cerniauskaite, the spokesperson for Nord VPN, said, “Our team is investigating the new directive recently passed by the Indian government and exploring the best course of action. We are currently operating as usual until the law comes into effect in two months. Our commitment to protecting our customers’ privacy leads us to consider removing servers from India when no other options remain.”

VPNs do not track users other than for payment information, which is stored by the payment gateway. This is the dominant data collection and tracking practice by VPNs, according to Akash Karmakar, a partner at the law firm Panag & Babu. The most popular VPNs used a double-blind approach, where they did not collect user information and any grievances were raised anonymously.
