Xiaomi has unveiled Xiaomi Smart Eyewear, a pair of smart glasses. Although there are no plans to sell them, Xiaomi has provided enough information to make the concept product seem plausible — at least for the time being.

Xiaomi’s glasses have a traditional design, but unlike Facebook’s and Ray Ban’s recently revealed Stories glasses, they do have a display that can be used for augmented reality. When compared to OLED, Xiaomi says it chose a monochrome MicroLED system because it has “greater pixel density and longer lifespan while having a simpler construction.” MicroLED “allows for a more compact display, as well as easier screen integration,” according to Xiaomi.
Micro LED is a self-emissive display that is widely regarded as OLED’s natural successor. However, it is still prohibitively expensive, and it has only been used in a few commercial products. Xiaomi’s display is 2.4mm by 2.02mm and has a peak brightness of 2 million units, making it “about the size of a grain of rice.” Of course, once the light reaches your eye, it won’t be as brilliant – the high brightness is necessary so that it can be seen in direct sunlight after passing through an optical waveguide lens that refracts and channels the light. For the display, Xiaomi cites use cases such as navigation, live translation, and notifications.

The glasses are self-contained Android devices that don’t require a continual phone connection – Xiaomi claims they may one day be able to replace your phone. A quad-core Arm processor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth components, a battery, and a 5-megapixel camera are all included. The spectacles are only 51 grams, according to Xiaomi.
As previously said, these glasses will not be available to the general public and may not even exist, so you should be sceptical of Xiaomi’s promises. The concept demonstration, which comes after Facebook’s announcement and just before Apple’s iPhone event, is a strong indication that Xiaomi wants to be regarded as a player in the AR space.
