iPhone owners should beware of picking up bad vibrations from powerful motorbikes, as they may damage camera systems, Apple has said.
The technology giant published a warning iPhones should not be attached to powerful bikes, in a support document spotted by MacRumors.
Engine vibrations can harm phones’ optical-image stabilisation or closed-loop autofocus systems, it says.
Owners of scooters and mopeds should also use “vibration-dampening mounts”. On social media, several users have said their phones have been damaged after being attached to a motorcycle. And Apple says several models of iPhone are susceptible to the damage. Apple has advised iPhone owners to avoid picking up severe vibrations from powerful motorcycles, as they may damage camera systems.
In a support document uncovered by MacRumors, Apple issued a warning that iPhones should not be hooked to powerful bikes.
According to the report, engine vibrations can affect phones’ optical image stabilisation and closed-loop autofocus technologies.”
Vibration-dampening mounts” should also be used by scooter and moped owners. Several users on social media have claimed that their phones have been destroyed as a result of being tethered to a motorcycle.

Moreover, Apple claims that several iPhone models are vulnerable to harm. The systems in question are designed to improve picture quality by compensating for movement, vibrations, and gravity’s effects.
Reasons for iPhone camera damage
However, high-power or high-volume motorcycle engines produce “intense high-amplitude vibrations,” which can be transmitted through the frame and handlebars, according to the support page.
It says that “direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges may degrade the performance of these systems and result in reduced image quality for photos and videos.”
“The OIS and closed-loop AF systems in iPhone are designed for durability,” Apple says. Long-term direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within specified frequency ranges may compromise the operation of these systems and result in degraded image quality for images and movies, as is the case with many consumer electronics that contain systems like OIS.”

Magnetic accessories, which may interfere with and temporarily disable the sensors, are also incompatible with the two functions. The impacts of vibration can be reduced by utilising a vibration-dampening mount for your phone, but it’s recommended not to mount your iPhone to your motorcycle at all for long-term safety.
The idea is to avoid attaching iPhones to bikes in the first place, which is something that many people use for navigation.
Instead of ruining your pricey iPhone camera in the long term, it’s advisable to buy a second device (ideally Android) for your navigation purposes.
