Users can now install Windows 11 on non-compliant PCs

Microsoft will not prevent you from installing Windows 11 on computers with older processors but there’s a catch

In June, Microsoft released its Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements, making it clear that only Intel 8th Gen and later CPUs would be supported. Microsoft has since clarified that this workaround is intended only for companies to assess Windows 11 and that individuals should upgrade at their own risk because the company cannot guarantee driver compatibility or overall system dependability. This technique of installing Windows 11 will not be recommended or advertised by Microsoft to consumers.

Microsoft has announced that it will not prevent users from installing Windows 11 on most older computers. While Microsoft has suggested hardware requirements for Windows 11 — which it is mainly following — a restriction on installing the OS will only be imposed if you try to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 via Windows Update. This means that anyone with an older CPU that doesn’t pass the upgrade test can still download an ISO file of Windows 11 and manually install the operating system.

It’s a significant change that will ensure that millions of PCs are not left behind in terms of technology. Consumers will still have to download an ISO file and manually install Windows 11, which the great majority of people are unlikely to do.

Microsoft is also modifying its minimum system requirements to enable more CPUs, in addition to the workaround to install Windows 11. However, for those who want to install Windows manually, the true minimum Windows 11 requirements are that you have a 64-bit 1GHz processor with two or more cores, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Intel’s Core X-series and Xeon W-series processors, as well as the Core 7820HQ chip included in the Surface Studio 2, will now be officially supported for Windows 11 upgrades.

The 7820HQ is only supported on devices that come with Declarative, Componentized, Hardware Support Apps, which Microsoft has been testing with Intel (DCH). DCH is a cleaner and more secure driver design that Microsoft has been encouraging OEMs and hardware makers to adopt in recent years. With DCH, OEMs may segregate apps like GPU control panels from the driver install, allowing them to be serviced separately without having to issue fresh driver updates.

Despite recent testing, Microsoft will not officially support any Zen 1 CPUs. There are no additions to the supported CPU list after thoroughly examining the first generation of AMD Zen CPUs in collaboration with AMD.

Although there is a workaround for installing Windows 11 on earlier AMD systems, Microsoft claims that devices that don’t satisfy the minimum hardware requirements “experienced 52 per cent more kernel mode crashes.” According to Microsoft, devices that satisfy the specified minimum requirements “had a 99.8% crash-free experience.”

Microsoft also explains how it arrived at these Windows 11 minimum system requirements. With Trusted Platform Module (TPM) support and virtualization-based security, Microsoft hopes to push Windows toward modern DCH drivers and modern security. There’s never an ideal moment to try to modify hardware requirements, but having a workaround in place helps soften the shock of what Microsoft is trying to accomplish with Windows 11’s security, compatibility, and stability.
