At the INNO day 2020 event, OPPO showcased its concept rollable display phone. OPPO X 2021 is the latest achievement from OPPO’s constant exploration into mobile phone form factors. It is built with a rollable OLED display. The display of the phone can be expanded from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches.
Compared with foldable technologies, rollable displays are a lot more adaptable. As they can be adjustable between the minimum and maximum sizes for different use case scenarios. Unlike foldable devices, rollable devices will be slim and handy as a regular smartphone. Also, the size of the rollable display phones can be adjusted to the requirements.
The device uses OPPO’s proprietary Roll Motor powertrain to expand the display. The powertrain consists of two motors that generate a constant force to unfold the device uniformly.
OPPO designed a special bearing with a 2 in 1 plate slider to support the screen even when it is completely expanded. At one edge it has an arc that guides the screen to roll back without hassle.
OPPO X 2021 uses a Warp Track high-strength screen laminate that adds some strength to the display. The laminate is made with high-strength steel, and it’s only 0.1mm thick at its thinnest.
