The debut of Reliance Jio’s new smartphone has been postponed due to a chip shortage.

Jio, or Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, is an Indian telecommunications company and a subsidiary of Jio Platforms that operates a countrywide LTE network that covers all 22 telecom circles in India.

The COVID-19 pandemic, like practically every other industry, threw the world’s leading chipmakers’ 2020 manufacturing plans into chaos, particularly those in South Korea and Taiwan.

Reliance Jio : Reasons for chip shortage

Due to severe interruptions in the complex microchip supply chain, semiconductor manufacturers were unable to produce enough of these critical components, resulting in massive demand-supply imbalances.

Reliance Jio stated earlier this week that it would be delaying the introduction of the much-anticipated JioPhone Next by a few weeks, citing the global semiconductor chip scarcity, which has impacted hundreds of businesses.

“Both businesses have begun testing JioPhone Next with a restricted set of users for further refinement and are actively working to make it available more widely in time for the Diwali festival season,” the firm and Google said in a joint statement. This extra time will also assist to alleviate the present worldwide semiconductor shortages.”

The COVID-19 pandemic, like practically every other industry, threw the world’s leading chipmakers’ 2020 manufacturing plans into chaos, particularly those in South Korea and Taiwan. This wasn’t much of a problem at first, because constraints on mobility drove down car sales while demand for laptops, computers, and phones increased as people stranded sought to keep themselves entertained.

However, as limits were gradually lifted, the enormous pent-up demand for electronic devices resulted in a surge in semiconductor demand, as businesses struggled to keep up.

Due to severe interruptions in the sophisticated microchip supply chain, semiconductor manufacturers were unable to produce enough of these critical components, resulting in massive demand-supply mismatches across a wide range of industries, including autos, computers, gaming gadgets, and more.

The scarcity has exposed thousands of companies’ reliance on Taiwan and South Korea, the two countries that produce the vast majority of all semiconductors produced worldwide. Efforts to alleviate the impact of chip scarcity are already underway. South Korea has launched a $450 billion plan to strengthen and grow its foundries over a ten-year period. The Biden administration in the United States has announced $52 billion in subsidies to expand the country’s chip-making capabilities.

Last week, China’s SMIC announced an $8.87 billion investment to build a new chip manufacturing plant in Shanghai, as part of a larger Chinese drive to become self-reliant in the chipmaking industry.

Despite these efforts, most experts believe the shortage will last until 2023, putting a damper on the economies of countries that have already been hit by numerous waves of SARS-CoV-2. The deficit is also expected to postpone the widespread adoption and rollout of wireless technologies, which account for more than half of all chip demand.

Chip shortages have been harming smartphone markets across the board, even though key global smartphone makers have stockpiled components. As a result, component prices have risen, making finished products more expensive. Smartphone manufacturers have used a variety of techniques to deal with the present shortage, including price rises and limited geographic launches, according to Prabhu Ram, the head of industry intelligence at market research firm CMR.

JioPhone Next is the first-of-its-kind handset with an optimised Android and Play Store operating system. The device and operating system will include premium features previously associated with more powerful smartphones, such as voice-first features that allow users to consume content and navigate the phone in their own language, a great camera experience, and access to the latest Android feature and security updates, according to the companies.

Google Assistant, automated read-aloud, language translation for any on-screen text, and a smart camera with India-centric filters are among the features of the JioPhone Next, according to the latest reports.
