Global Electric Vehicle Leader Tesla is inching closer to making its official debut in India after it received approval to make or import four models.
As per information shared by the Centre-controlled Vahan Sewa, Tesla India Motors and Energy, the India subsidiary of Tesla Inc. has received approvals for all four of its vehicle models. The tests ensure the vehicle matches the requirements of the Indian market in terms of emission and safety and roadworthiness.

It was not clear which models or variants these were but Model 3 and Model Y has been seen testing in India for the past several weeks regularly on Indian roads.
Yesterday stocks of 3 Indian companies started to raise due to a rumoured Tesla Partnership. Reports Suggested Tesla had tied up with three Indian auto components suppliers to make parts like windshields, sub-assemblies, instrument panels and other items from companies like Sona Comstar, Sandhar Technologies and Bharat Forge.
Tesla has also registered its India unit under the name of Tesla India Motors, in Karnataka, according to a filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).
However it’s not an easy road ahead for Tesla, import duties in India are among the highest in the world. Import duty on EVs in India is 100 percent if CIF (cost insurance and freight) value is more than $40,000 and 60 percent of CIF value is less than $40,000.
Gaining a foothold in the Indian car market won’t be easy considering EVs account for only 1% of the nation’s annual car sales and Tesla’s automobiles are very expensive. Scant charging infrastructure and a lack of financing for companies wanting to develop electric cars are other reasons why India is behind in the electric shift.
Hope all the issues get sorted out and we see a Tesla in Indian Roads in not so distant future.
