Samsung Unveiled A Massive 200 MP Sensor For Smartphones

So far, rumours have suggested that Samsung is developing a 200-megapixel smartphone camera, and that Xiaomi could be the first OEM to licence it

Megapixels won’t decide a picture quality. However, they count in the case of depth analysis. Smartphone manufacturers mostly come up with camera sensors that are usually not native to them. Among those, Samsung also makes camera sensors.

Rumoured Mi 12 with 200MP Camera

Samsung is almost certain to be the first commercial manufacturer of a mobile imaging sensor with a resolution of more than 200 megapixels.

And today The long-awaited 200MP ISOCELL camera sensor from Samsung has finally been revealed. The ISOCELL HP1 is the first 200MP smartphone camera sensor from the firm (and the globe). It has dynamic pixel binning technology, which adjusts the output resolution based on the ambient light to achieve the best results. The ISOCELL GN5, a tiny 50MP camera sensor for smartphones, was also announced by the company.

Samsung ISOCELL HP1

Thanks to the all-new Chameleon Cell pixel-binning technology, the Samsung ISOCELL HP1 guarantees exceptional low-light performance. It is the industries first 200 MP (16,384×12,288 ) Sensor.

Depending on the environment, the sensor can employ a two-by-two, four-by-four, or complete pixel architecture. The ISOCELL HP1 can merge 16 nearby pixels into one huge 2.56m pixel in low-lighting settings, resulting in an effective resolution of 12.5MP. Larger pixels allow the sensor to capture more light, resulting in better photographs

In terms of video capabilities, the ISOCELL HP1 can take 8K footage at 30fps with the minimal field of vision degradation. The sensor reduces the effective resolution to 50MP by merging four neighbouring pixels, enabling 8K video capture without the need to crop or scale down the complete image resolution.

While Samsung sparked rumours by teasing 200MP and “six cameras” in an Exynos teaser post on Twitter, the latter could simply be a demonstration of the new SoC’s capabilities, rather than a prediction of what the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will offer.

Samsung ISOCELL GN5

Samsung also unveiled the ISOCELL GN5, a new sensor. Samsung claims it’s the first 1.0m-pixel sensor to incorporate its Dual Pixel Pro technology, and it’s a 50-megapixel sensor (8,160 x 6,144) with 1.0m pixels. That effectively makes it seem like a smaller version of Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra’s 1.4m-pixel GN2, which was the largest phone camera sensor available when it debuted this year. This sensor can also shoot videos at 8K @ 24fps

Samsung hasn’t announced when any of the new sensors would be mass-produced, but samples are presently available for phone makers.

Unfortunately, Both of Samsung’s new ISOCELL camera sensors are now being sampled, and we may see handsets with these sensors later this year. Xiaomi is said to be rumoured to launch a 200MP phone in future with Samsung’s sensor base.
