Renault India has unveiled plans to introduce powerful hybrid powertrains for its upcoming vehicles in India. These robust hybrid offerings are set to replace the previously efficient diesel engines, ensuring competitive products. Renault is committed to localizing the strong hybrid technology, mirroring its successful strategy with locally-produced models such as Kwid, Triber, and Kiger.

The move towards cleaner and greener vehicles is evident in Renault’s intentions to provide a diverse portfolio to Indian buyers. In addition to traditional petrol engines, the company is set to offer electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrids, and strong hybrids in its lineup. Despite the current absence of mainstream plug-in hybrid powertrains in the Indian market due to cost concerns, Renault is eager to explore this avenue, aiming to make the technology accessible by localizing production.
Renault’s endeavor marks a significant development as it becomes the third automaker, following Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, to commit to long-term strong hybrid offerings. This decision comes at a time when market leaders Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have garnered favorable responses for their strong-hybrid models, showcasing the potential for improved fuel economy.
Renault Hybrid
Renault’s strong hybrid technology includes the E-Tech range of powertrains, featuring the 145hp and 160hp variants. These advanced powertrains draw inspiration from Renault’s Formula 1 program and boast over 160 patents. The system employs a combination of series and parallel architectures, incorporating two electric motors. The 145hp version integrates a 49hp electric motor and a 24hp high-voltage starter generator, complementing a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter, 94hp petrol engine. With a 1.2kWh battery, this hybrid powertrain can achieve an impressive 24kpl under normal driving conditions.
The 160hp E-Tech stands as a plug-in hybrid option, potentially powering upcoming models like the Duster or Bigster, scheduled for release in India by 2025. Equipped with a larger 9.8kWh battery and two electric motors, this variant is driven by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The hybrid engine optimizes fuel efficiency through an Atkinson cycle for select versions.
