On Thursday, Facebook Inc. announced the introduction of its first smart glasses, dubbed “Ray-Ban Stories,” in collaboration with Ray-Ban, in a step toward its goal of producing true augmented-reality spectacles.

The glasses, which were developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban maker Essilor Luxottica, allow users to listen to music, make phone calls, and take images and short videos, which they can then share across Facebook’s services via a companion app. These smart glasses compete with Snapchat’s Spectacles, which are now in their third generation, and come in classic Ray-Ban styles like Wayfarer, Meteor, and Round, as well as additional frame and glass colour choices.

With single-tap, double-tap, and triple-tap movements, Facebook and Ray-Ban have integrated touch-sensitive controls that can manage music playback, calls, and volume.

The shutter button on the right can be used to take pictures and record videos. Wi-Fi is dual-band on the smart glasses, including 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels. The smart glasses are charged through a unique port in the hinge, and the battery is charged with the provided case. The carrying case is charged using the included USB Type-C connection.

Clustering technology and a background noise suppression algorithm deliver a superior calling experience comparable to that of dedicated headphones.

Users can also store content to their phone’s camera roll, where they can modify and share it.

Last year, Facebook’s chief scientist predicted that the firm would take five to ten years to bring “genuine” AR glasses to market, which would superimpose virtual things onto the wearer’s perspective of the real world.
