The latest special edition smartphone cooperation is the OnePlus Nord 2 Pac-Man Edition. In the past, the company has collaborated with companies like McLaren, Marvel, and Star Wars to create unique editions. This time, we meet the venerable eponymous character from Pac-Man, the game that has enthralled millions of people for over four decades.
OnePlus Nord 2 Pac-Man Edition : External packaging and box contents
The Pac-Man Edition comes with special packaging, which includes a new custom box design and wrapping paper. The packaging features a simple white design with a grid of dots and iridescent Pac-Man and OnePlus logos.
The inside of the wrapping paper is significantly more intriguing, featuring a pattern made up of Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, the four Pac-Man ghosts.
Finally, the charger and cord are in the box. The Pac-Man Edition’s charger comes with the same as the OnePlus 9 series and now supports USB-PD charging.
External look and physical overview
The phone’s back comes with a phosphorescent painting that glows in the dark when exposed to light. Another maze-like pattern appears, this time with the Nord and OnePlus logos included. The phone’s backsights are green, and if it’s exposed to bright light, it will shine much brighter.
To view the glow effectively, you’ll also need to be in a very dark location. Still, it’s a cool effect that can look fairly great in the situation. The phone’s rest of the design is like that of the normal OnePlus Nord. The only thing that stands out is that the alert slider is blue.
OnePlus Nord 2 Pac-Man Edition : Software front
The software contains the rest of the special edition’s gimmicks. When you first turn on the phone, you’ll see a special OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man wordmark, with Pac-Man appearing and eating half of the words. When you first set up the phone, you’ll get even more personalised messages and texts regarding the phone’s hidden Easter eggs.
The Easter eggs are essentially stickers that appear after you finish a task on your phone. When we first plugged the charger, for example, Pac-Man sticker. These stickers can apply to photographs in the Gallery app.
The Pac-Man 256 game from Bandai Namco is also pre-installed. This game, however, is not limited to this phone and can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store by anyone.
Miscellaneous
Aside from the pre-installed material, the tiny flourishes found throughout the UI are more engaging. When you scroll across the screen to disclose more toggles, you’ll notice a miniature Pac-Man eating the page indicator dot and jumping back and forth as you navigate between the pages.
This special edition also includes a unique fingerprint unlock animation. Every time you contact the fingerprint sensor logo, Pac-Man and the four ghosts appear and wander around the maze until the phone unlocks.
Charging has its animation as well. Pac-Man emerges on the screen when you plug in a charger and begins munching dots as the phone charges. The small audio alerts are also cool. A special Pac-Man ringtone, alarm tone, and notification sound are included with the Pac-Man Edition. These noises are from the game or were influenced by it, and the notification sound, in particular, is rather good.
Finally, the camera has a bespoke camera filter that adds a colour tone with significant chromatic aberration, as well as Pac-Man and ghosts moving around the frame. Because the characters wander about, each shot shows them in a new location. It’s a shame this effect isn’t available for video because it would have been much more useful. The rest of the software is the same as the OnePlus Nord 2’s normal experience.
Should you buy the OnePlus Nord 2 Pac-Man edition?
It would have been nicer if it had cost a little more and come with extra custom hardware, such as a matching charger and cable or some form of memorabilia in the box, like with past OnePlus special editions. There’s also the matter of why OnePlus picked the Nord 2 over its flagships in the past, although it’s not a great phone.
A limited-edition OnePlus 9 Pro would have been a better fit, and the greater cost of the missing items would have been easier to bear. The Nord 2 Pac-Man Edition is now the Nord 2 to buy if you were planning to buy a Nord 2 anyway and have the extra cash to spend on the special edition.
