New BH series vehicle registration comes into existence

Usually moving an automobile or a two-wheeler to a different state might be a hassle.

The Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways have launched a new ‘BH‘ registration series, with ‘BH’ standing for Bharat. The transport ministry has declared that automobiles with this registration mark will not need to be re-registered in other states, allowing for seamless vehicle transfers.

BH series

For the uninitiated, the ‘BH’ car registration series is available voluntarily for vehicles owned by military personnel and state and federal government employees. The facility is especially beneficial for those who are likely to be relocated frequently to various states or union territories within the country.

The Bharat series is also available to private sector enterprises and organizations with offices in four or more states or union territories (BH-series). Vehicle owners are already forced to pay a 15-year upfront road tax under existing regulations. If an individual chooses to transfer and re-register their vehicle to another state in this situation, the owner must pay the road tax for the remaining years and reclaim the amount paid from the state where the vehicle was initially registered.

BH – Series non-transport cars are subject to a motor vehicle tax levied by states or union territories at the time of registration (as per invoice price) — 8% road tax on vehicles priced between Rs 10 and Rs 20 lakh (as per invoice price) – 10% road tax on vehicles valued at much than Rs 20 lakh (as per invoice price) – Road tax of 12%.

If the payment of motor vehicle tax is not made within seven days of the due date, an extra fee of one hundred rupees per day will be charged. It’s worth mentioning that diesel automobiles will be paid an additional 2% road tax, while electric cars will be charged 2% less than the current tax structure. The road tax will be collected biannually, with the owner responsible for paying the tax every two years.

The demands, however, do not stop there. The citizens’ forum calls for a pan-India taxation system in which a person relocating from one state to another can submit taxes from any location without having to go back and forth between his or her current and previous residences. “There are several additional improvements that need to be implemented. To begin, a central taxation system should be established, followed by the creation of a transparent gateway for people to avoid the hassle,”

The motor vehicle tax (rounded to the nearest integer) will be levied annually on and after 14 years from the first date of vehicle registration, and will be half of the tax mentioned above.

The registration mark for BH-series vehicles will be generated at random using the portal and displayed in black on white. The first unit consists of the final two digits of the registration year, two letters ‘BH,’ and four numerals ranging from 0001 to 9999, followed by letters like A, B, C, and then AA, AB, AZ, and so on.
