Bengaluru-based start-up Minus Zero recently unveiled zPod, which it claims is India’s first autonomous vehicle. The fully-electric prototype is equipped with advanced camera-sensor technology and has the capability to achieve Level 5 autonomy, meaning it can operate without human intervention in all driving conditions and environments. Minus Zero aims to revolutionize the mobility landscape by showcasing its cutting-edge AI-based autonomous vehicle technology.

Affordable Autonomy

Unlike other autonomous vehicles that rely on expensive sensor arrays, zPod utilizes strategically positioned high-resolution cameras as its primary sensory system. These cameras capture real-time images of the vehicle’s surroundings, transmitting the data to an AI system. The AI processes this information to make informed decisions regarding navigation, speed control, and obstacle avoidance. This camera-based approach makes zPod a more affordable autonomous vehicle option.

In-Campus Mobility and ADAS Collaboration

Initially, zPod’s use case is limited to in-campus mobility, catering to the transportation needs within the confines of specific campuses or controlled environments such as tech parks, universities, or corporate campuses. However, Minus Zero also aims to collaborate with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to enhance their advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). By offering its technology to OEMs, the start-up seeks to contribute to the development and improvement of autonomous driving capabilities.

Not an OEM, but a Technology Provider

While zPod serves as a working demonstration of Minus Zero’s AI-based autonomous vehicle technology, the start-up emphasizes that it does not intend to become an OEM or manufacture cars. The founders believe that the concept of autonomous vehicles requires a collaborative effort from various stakeholders within the ecosystem. They aim to focus on advancing their proprietary technologies, Nature Inspired AI (NIA), and True Vision Autonomy (TVA), and exploring opportunities for growth and collaboration with OEMs.

Nature-Inspired AI and True Vision Autonomy

Minus Zero’s proprietary technologies, NIA and TVA, form the foundation of their autonomous driving system. Nature-inspired AI draws inspiration from physics-aware vision and the decision-making capabilities of the human brain to handle real-world road scenarios efficiently. This approach enables real-time low-power processing, and adaptability to uncertain conditions, and eliminates the need to re-learn driving for different scenarios, geographies, or vehicles. TVA, being vehicle agnostic, can adapt to various use cases and vehicle form factors, relying solely on camera-based sensor technology to ensure safe navigation and a seamless user experience.

Redefining Mobility Design

By leveraging their concepts, Minus Zero aims to empower automakers to explore new design possibilities for vehicles beyond the constraints of the traditional driver-centric design. The start-up envisions redefining mobility as a user-focused experiential design, where the emphasis is on enhancing the overall user experience and convenience.

Minus Zero’s unveiling of zPod marks a significant milestone in India’s autonomous driving landscape. By introducing an affordable camera-based autonomous vehicle prototype, the start-up aims to showcase its advanced AI technology and encourage collaborations with OEMs. With its focus on Nature Inspired AI and True Vision Autonomy, Minus Zero envisions a future where mobility is transformed into a seamless and user-centric experience.
