In less than a second, a white hat hacker from Pangu Labs was able to remotely jailbreak an iPhone 13 Pro.
Apple markets the iPhone as having the highest level of privacy and security. With iOS 15 aboard, the latest iPhone 13 models simply add to that. However, a white-hat hacker in China has demonstrated that iPhones, even the current iPhone 13 series, are just as vulnerable to assaults as Android rivals. In less than a second, the iPhone 13 Pro was hacked!
According to IT Home, a white hat hacker from Pangu Labs managed to remotely jailbreak an iPhone 13 Pro in less than a second during the fourth “Tianfu Cup” International Network Security Competition in China. The hacker only needed the user to click a link on the device to start the operation.
The hacker was able to gain remote access to the highest levels of this jailbroken iPhone 13 Pro, including the ability to delete all data. The hacker had easy access to all of the user’s information after the iPhone was jailbroken. The white-hat hacker was able to acquire access to the device’s photo albums and apps. It was also possible to remotely remove the data.
The vulnerability was discovered in the Safari browser and the iOS kernel, allowing for attacks on the iOS device. The worst thing is that the attack took place in the background, with no way for the user to realise his or her phone had been hacked.
It’s unclear whether this particular iPhone 13 Pro was running an older version of iOS 15 or had the most recent fixes installed. It’s just been a month since Apple launched iOS 15 to the general public, and there have already been a couple of upgrades to address bugs that have been identified.
This type of hack also demonstrates that, regardless of the device you use, it is always a good idea to avoid clicking on dangerous links provided over SMS or from shady websites. A cyberattack can happen in the background, as the white hat hacker illustrated, and the victim may not even be aware of it.
Next week, the iPhone 13 series, as well as all previous iPhone models running iOS 15, will receive the iOS 15.1 update, which will include support for the new AirPods 3rd Generation.
