Apple has beaten Samsung to emerge as the biggest smartphone player in the fourth quarter of 2020, driven by the IPhone 12 series success, the first to feature next-generation 5G capability. The tech giant shipped 81.9 million iPhone units in the last quarter of last year, according to Counterpoint Research, which helped Apple to crush the competition. Another research firm, Canalys, reached a similar conclusion.

Samsung slipped to the No. 2 positions in the quarter with 6.2% growth on the shipment 73.9 million devices, giving it a 19.1% market share. Xiaomi rounded out the top three with 43.3 million devices shipped and an 11.2% market share.

In terms of vendors, IDC claims a clear shift among the top five smartphone players. It adds that Apple delivered a phenomenal performance in Q4 2020, returning to the top position with 90.1 million. It adds that Apple’s performance in the last quarter is the highest shipment volume from a vendor in a single quarter and resulted in a 23.4% market share and 22.2% year-over-year growth.

Huawei, on the other hand, fell to the number sixth spot in the last quarter. Sales of smartphones fell to 33.0 million units, a decline of 35 per cent year over year. The Chinese tech company has been struggling to survive after the US restricted access to the key components and software that are needed to make a smartphone. Huawei recently sold its Honor phone business to the newly-formed Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., a consortium of partners and government-backed businesses.
