WhatsApp has been teasing its multi-device feature for months. A feature that will allow you to use WhatsApp on your computer and mobile together, with up to four devices. (And, of course, end-to-end encryption will protect all of your messages.)
WhatsApp has been slow to implement the function, but it is now available to all users as a public beta, following months of testing. This article explains how WhatsApp’s multi-device feature works and how to enable it.
The multi-device capability of WhatsApp allows you to utilise it like Telegram or Facebook Messenger. Manually linking devices requires a QR code, and these devices must reconnect with your smartphone at least once every 14 days.
While you can connect up to four devices to your WhatsApp account (including Facebook Portal), you can only have one phone connected at a time. Once enabled, starting the WhatsApp Desktop client will retrieve recent conversations from your WhatsApp account automatically and securely.
How to Enable Multi Device on Apple iPhone
If you want to try it out, go to WhatsApp settings and enable the option.
- Go to the “Settings” tab on your iPhone
- Select “Linked Devices“
- Select the “Multi-Device Beta” option
- Click on “Join Beta” button
- Tap the “Continue” button on the pop-up
How to Enable Multi Device on Android
- Tap the three-dotted menu button in the top toolbar on your Android smartphone
- Select “Linked Devices“.
- Select the “Multi-Device Beta” option
- Click on “Join Beta” button
The multi-device beta will enable once it completes the process. Current WhatsApp sessions will get logged out automatically when we enable the multi-device option. The application will take some time to retrieve current messages and media from your WhatsApp account. After it’s finished, you can continue to use WhatsApp as usual.
Things aren’t perfect or even complete, because this is a beta. If you’re using the WhatsApp Desktop app’s multi-device beta, there’s still a long list of capabilities that aren’t available.
WhatsApp “Multi device” limitations
- If your primary device is an iPhone, you cannot clear or delete communications on companion devices.
- Cannot send a message or make a phone call to someone who is using an older version of WhatsApp on their phone.
- On partner devices, you cannot see your current location in real time.
- On companion devices, you cannot create and see a broadcast list.
- Cannot call between Portals that have enrolled in the Multi-Device Beta and Portals that have not enrolled in the Multi-Device Beta.
- Link previews not available when you send messages through WhatsApp web.
If you need one of these features or are having problems, you may always exit the multi-device beta by going back to WhatsApp Settings, selecting “Linked Devices,” then “Multi-Device Beta,” and then “Leave beta.”
