Google photos: No more free backup

Google has pushed a new policy on Google photos effective from June 1, 2021. Google photos are appreciated for their countless photo and video uploads and backups in a compressed format. Sadly, certain features will discontinue from June 1, 2021.

The new policy says every file we upload to Google photos is counted in 15 GB of default storage which we get in every new Google account. Earlier, just uncompressed images were counted in default storage while compressed images were free. But now it’s not the same, all images uploaded are counted under default storage. Nonetheless, images uploaded before June 1, 2021, doesn’t come under the new policy.

You can still upload files until your default storage of 15 GB fills up. Once it fills you have the option for subscriptions in Google one. However, if you are not active on any of this service, Google may delete your content from the server. This change applies to all users of Google Photos across all platforms, including Android, iOS, and desktop.
