DJI Action 2 camera, a little camera with incredible capabilities.

The small, modular, and magnetic camera is more like GoPro’s Session than the original Osmo Action

DJI first introduced the Action camera a few years ago, at a time when action cameras dominated a few niches, and it has since mostly focused on drones, gimbal cameras, and other comparable items. Finally, a follow-up has arrived in the form of the DJI Action 2, which differs dramatically from the original in terms of appearance and functionality.

The Action 2 ditches the Osmo moniker in favour of modularity, with a range of additional parts and accessories that magnetically attach to the camera.

DJI Action 2 : the Compact candy

The camera module is compact (measures 39 x 39 x 22.3 mm and weighs 56g ) and features a 12MP sensor with 4K recording capabilities, a 155-degree field of view lens, and a 1.76-inch OLED touchscreen with Gorilla Glass protection. You can use magnets to attach a second touchscreen (which increases battery life and adds an array of microphones), an extra battery, or a variety of mounts that let you attach the camera to tripods or GoPro mounts, or even wear it as a necklace.

A 1/1.7″ sensor with 12 MP resolution and an ultra-wide 155o lens with f/2.8 aperture are included in the camera. With Rocksteady 2.0 and HorizonSteady, DJI has improved the stabilisation functions, ensuring that the horizon remains horizontal no matter how much the camera moves around.

It can shoot 4K at 120 frames per second, just like the New GoPro Hero10, but it doesn’t have any higher-resolution options (the Hero10 can shoot 5.3K60), and it’s 240fps super slow-motion operates at 1080p instead of 2.7K like the GoPro. In addition, the DJI has 32GB of built-in storage (expandable with a microSD card), which the GoPro does not.

A 580 mAh battery powers the device. The camera is waterproof, and you can dive up to 10 metres without any further protection. But, because this is a modular camera, it gets a lot better if you add the extras. Although you can’t swap the sensor and lenses as you can with an Insta360 One R, the camera’s capability can still be expanded significantly.

Vloggers will benefit from the Front Touchscreen Module. The front screen, for starters, allows them to frame the shot (something to original Action also held over the GoPros).

It also contains four microphones for enhanced audio capture, as well as an additional battery (1,300 mAh) that allows the camera to video for up to 160 minutes.

The DJI Mic is wireless, allowing vloggers to capture more dynamic shots than they could with the Front Screen mod. It also supports voice commands, allowing you to begin recording without touching the device. The technology has two microphones that can work at a distance of up to 250 metres. The receiver serves as a level monitor and incorporates a touchscreen for convenient use. The DJI Mic is currently available for pre-order for €330.

DJI Action 2 : Pricing and availability

The DJI Action 2 is currently available for pre-order; deliveries will not begin until early November. The Power Combo costs €400 and includes the camera, power module, lanyard, and adapter mount. The Front Touchscreen Module and the Magnetic Ball-Joint Mount are included in the Dual Screen Combo, which costs €520. The camera may be purchased through the official DJI store.

Owing to this launch, a new software upgrade for the GoPro Hero 10 Black arrived and was said to improve the battery life by up to 154 percent.
