Apple hires former Tesla engineer to boost self-driving car effort

In 2014, Apple began working on “Project Titan,” with upwards of 1,000 car experts and engineers developing an electric vehicle at a secret location near the company’s Cupertino headquarters.

Over the last several years, internal strife, leadership issues, and other problems affected the car project and 2016 rumours even suggested Apple shelved plans for a car, but the most recent information shows Apple has overcome development problems and is moving forward with plans to develop a consumer-facing autonomous vehicle.

The Apple Car project has seen multiple leadership changes and hundreds of employees got laid off during development, but it is now under the leadership of John Giannandrea, Apple’s AI and machine learning chief, who took over the reins from Bob Mansfield after Mansfield retired in 2020.

Apple has now hired a former engineer from Tesla to boost its car-development efforts, Bloomberg News reported on Friday (Nov 5), citing people with knowledge of the matter.

Cupertino, California-based Apple has tapped Christopher Moore for its team working on a self-driving car, the report said.

Apple and Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

The news comes weeks after the head of Apple’s car project, Doug Field, joined Ford Motor to lead the auto maker’s advanced technology and embedded systems efforts.

Reuters reported last year that Apple was moving forward with self-driving car technology and was targeting 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its breakthrough battery technology.

Since early 2017, Apple has been testing self-driving vehicles on public roads in California, using several 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs leased from Hertz. The SUVs spotted on the streets of Cupertino host of sensors and cameras as Apple prepares its self-driving software, and testing has ramped up over the years. Apple has over 60 test vehicles out on the road.

We still have years to go before an Apple Car is ready to debut, and we’ll likely hear much more about the project as Apple will need to seek deals with a whole new set of supply chain partners to manufacture a vehicle.
