In the simplest possible definition, 5G is the fifth generation of cellular networking. It’s the next step in mobile technology, what the phones and tablets of the future will use for data, and it should make our current LTE networks feel as slow and irrelevant as 3G data seems now.

To recap, the first generation of mobile networks (retroactively referred to as 1G) came out in around 1982. It was a fully analog system until the launch of 2G (second generation networks), which made the jump to digital when it launched in 1991. 2G also added cellular data in the form of GPRS and EDGE technologies. Roughly 10 years later, 3G networks launched, offering an even faster data rate than 2G.
Around 10 years after that, our current LTE networks — what we call 4G, although there’s some contention on what that really means — are the fourth generation of networking. Historically, that works out to a new generation of networking technology every decade or so. 5G networks will presumably offer a similar leap forward when it comes to things like data speed.
5G Roll-out in India
The 5G spectrum auction recently concluded in India, with Jio taking the most spectrum, followed by Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and the new entrant: Adani Group.
People close in the BusinessLine have revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch 5G services in India on September 29, which is when the yearly Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022 event will commence. This is a 3-day event, which takes place at Pragati Maidan.
To recall, this was previously expected to happen on August 15 as an initial rollout. 5G is expected to reach some cities as part of the first phase of rollout in October and will eventually get more places soon. The proper commercial availability is expected to happen in a year or two.
The reason for the slight delay could be to better prepare the telecom operators for the 5G rollout in at least a few cities.
In a statement to BusinessLine, an unknown senior government official said, “September 29 will be the first day of the IMC and the Prime Minister is likely to launch the 5G services commercially, where all telecom operators and their vendors will be showcasing the 5G technology. There will also be global players at the three-day event between September 29 and October 1 at Pragati Maidan.”
