Israel was by far the most outlier, with approximately 600% more submissions than its baseline. Based on the number of submissions to VirusTotal, South Korea, Vietnam, China, Singapore, India, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Iran, and the United Kingdom rounded out the top ten most impacted countries.

VirusTotal was founded in June 2004 and was acquired by Google in September 2012. Chronicle Security, a cybersecurity company that is part of Google Cloud Platform, took over ownership of the company in January 2018. (GCP).

In its first ‘Ransomware Activity Report,’ VirusTotal’s Vicente Diaz said, “This report is designed to help researchers, security practitioners, and the general public understand the nature of ransomware attacks while enabling cyber professionals to better analyse suspicious files, URLs, domains, and IP addresses.”

Hackers are now threatening to divulge sensitive or important information if organisations do not pay up or notify law enforcement agencies, in addition to demanding money.

Ransomware activity peaked in the first two quarters of 2020, owing mostly to the ransomware-as-a-service group GandCrab (though its prevalence fell substantially in the second half of the year),” Diaz stated.

In 2020 and the first half of 2021, at least 130 different ransomware families were active, with 30,000 clusters of malware that looked and acted similarly.

According to the analysis, there is a never-ending baseline of ransomware activity involving almost 100 malware families. Attackers are using a variety of methods to transmit their ransomware, including well-known botnet malware and other Remote Access Trojans (RATs).

The research stated that “in most cases, they are deploying fresh or updated ransomware samples for their attacks.” It claims that no ransomware attacks have ever been reported on any Chrome OS device in the business, education, or consumer sectors.
